Then the pink ribbon burst onto the scene and changed everything.
At the time, using a ribbon to draw attention to a cause was revolutionary and quickly caught people’s attention. Suddenly everyone – from everyday citizens to some of America’s biggest brands – got busy using the symbol to raise awareness and money for breast cancer.
Nearly overnight the stigma surrounding breast cancer ended, policy changes became a top priority, and billions of dollars began pouring into the space to expand prevention, early detection, and research.
